The CSO reported today that overseas trips to Ireland increased by 12.3% in the period April to June 2014.
Overseas trips to Ireland:
- The number of overseas trips to Ireland by non-residents increased from 1.893m in Quarter 2 2013 to 2.127m trips in Quarter 2 2014 (+12.3%).
- The number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers increased by 13.4% in Quarter 2 2014 compared with the same period of the previous year, up from 13.3m to 15.1m.
- The average duration of overseas trips to Ireland increased from 7.0 nights in Quarter 2 2013 to 7.1 nights in Quarter 2 2014. See table 6.
- Total tourism and travel earnings from overseas travellers to Ireland increased by 18.0% between Quarter 2 2013 and Quarter 2 2014, increasing from €1,103m to €1,302m.
Trips by Irish residents overseas:
- In Quarter 2 2014, the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas increased by 2.2%, from 1.75m trips in Quarter 2 2013 to 1.79m.
- The average duration of overseas trips made by Irish residents increased from 7.3 nights in Quarter 2 2013 to 7.4 nights in Quarter 2 2014. .
- Total tourism and travel expenditure by Irish residents overseas increased by 7.0%, up from €1,093m in Quarter 2 2013 to €1,169m in Quarter 2 2014.
Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s CSO figures are very strong – confirming that holidaymakers from overseas grew by +7% in the first half of 2014, with growth recorded from all of our market areas around the world. I am particularly pleased to see holidaymaker numbers from Great Britain showing growth of +13% and from North America of +9%. And, more importantly for the Irish economy, revenue from overseas tourists grew by +9% in the first six months of 2014 – an additional €123 million when compared with the same six-month period in 2013. Given that overseas tourism business accounts for almost 60% of all tourism revenue, this is good news indeed, with the increase in overseas holidaymakers and revenue helping to boost employment around the country.
Niall Gibbons continued: “This was a strong first half and reflects the sentiment we are hearing from our tourism industry partners in the markets and here at home. We are determined to ensure that tourism growth continues. We are rolling out a really extensive autumn campaign – aimed at boosting late-season travel to Ireland from around the globe and keeping this momentum going. The period September to December traditionally yields as much as 30% of our annual overseas tourism business.”
