Irish new car sales dropped 6.6% in 2013 despite a
sales surge after the
introduction of the bi-annual '132' registration on July 1st, according to the
Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).
Sales fell to 74,303 registrations from 79,574 in 2012 with Volkswagen
retaining its top market position at a 12.8% market share, followed
by Toyota at 10.32%, Ford at 10.26%, Hyundai at 7.85%
and Nissan at 7.16%.
December new car deliveries dipped 32.9% to just 212 units.
Volkswagen’s Golf was the best-selling model in 2013, while VW's
Audi brand was the most popular in the premium sector, according to SIMI data.
Alan Nolan, SIMI’s director general, said
on Thursday: “While the new car market is down on
last year, it did stage a strong recovery in the 132 registration period between
July and December after a very poor first six months. The commercial vehicle
sales figures are also an indication of recovery in the sector.”
In 2012, Volkswagen was also the best-selling car brand in Ireland in 2012,
the first time that the brand had achieved this in its history in Ireland.
Volkswagen was ahead of Toyota in second place and Ford in third place. SIMI
said that new car sales had dipped 12% in 2012 at 79,498.
The Ford Focus was top selling car in 2012 with
the VW Golf at No. 2.
Diesel engines accounted for 72.5% of the new car market in 2013 while the number of petrol models sold,
18,562 in 2012 to 19,786 last year.
Only 46 electric cars were sold while van sales
rose 3% to 11,076, while sales of
heavy commercial vehicles, such as trucks, jumped 27% to 1,717.
