US consumer spending increased in
July according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis today.
Personal income increased
0.3% in July after increasing 0.2% in June. Wages and salaries, the largest
component of personal income increased 0.4% in July after increasing 0.1% in
June.
Private wage and salary disbursements increased $24.3bn in July, compared with an increase of $8.9bn in June. Goods-producing industries' payrolls increased $3.7bn, in contrast to a decrease of $0.3bn; manufacturing payrolls increased $3.6bn, in contrast to a decrease of $0.9bn. Services-producing industries' payrolls increased $20.5bn, compared with an
increase of $9.2bn. Government wage and salary disbursements decreased $0.1bn in July; government wage and salary disbursements were unchanged in June.
Current-dollar disposable
personal income (DPI) rose 0.3% in July after increasing 0.2% in June.
Real DPI, income adjusted for inflation and taxes, decreased
0.1% in July after increasing 0.3% in June.
Real consumer spending, spending adjusted for price changes,
increased 0.5% in July after remaining flat in June. Spending on goods increased
0.4% in July after decreasing 0.2% in June.
PCE prices increased 0.4% in July after decreasing 0.1% in
June. Excluding food and energy, the PCE (personal consumer expenditure) price
index increased 0.2% in July after the same increase in June.
Personal saving rate: Personal saving as a percentage of DPI
was 5.0% in July, compared
with 5.5% in June.
