The Central Statistics Office (CSO) reported today that official figures show that 12,379 new cars were licensed in Ireland in March, a jump of 68.5% from the same month last year.

The figures are consistent with with those from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, which have been showing big rises in recent months following the introduction of a publicly subsides scrappage scheme in last December's Budget. The Central Statistics Office said the number of new goods vehicles also rose strongly - up 45.6% from March last year to 1,331.

1) In March 2010, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 20,711 compared with 17,331 in the corresponding month last year - an increase of 19.5%. See Table 1 below. 2) The total number of all new vehicles licensed during March 2010 was 14,665 compared with 9,306 during the same month in 2009 - an increase of 57.6%.

3) In March 2010, of the 12,379 new private cars licensed, 4,228 (34.2%) were petrol and 7,682 (62.1%) were diesel. See Table 2 below. 4) The highest number of new private cars licensed in March 2010, classified by make, was Ford (1,584) followed by Toyota (1,409), Volkswagen (1,379) and Nissan (1,255). See Table 3 below.

The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and classified by taxation class. Complementary figures for vehicle registrations are available separately (Vehicle Registrations).
