Irish new cars licensed fell 47.9% in September

The CSO reported today that there were 2,272 new private cars licensed in September 2009, compared with 4,364 in September 2008, a decrease of 47.9%.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed in September 2009 was 777 compared with 1,451 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 46.5%.

The vehicle licensing figures also show that:

  • In September 2009, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 8,914 compared with 14,292 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 37.6%.
  • The total number of all new vehicles licensed during September 2009 was 3,563 compared with 6,838 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 47.9%.
  • In September 2009, of the 2,272 new private cars licensed, 879 (38.7%) were petrol and 1,362 (59.9%) were diesel.
  • The highest number of new private cars licensed in September 2009, classified by make, was Ford (292) followed by Toyota (257), Volkswagen (256), Opel (218) and Nissan (153). See Table 3 below.

The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and classified by taxation class. Complementary figures for vehicle registrations are available separately: Vehicles Registered
