German annual consumer prices posted a zero change (±0.0%) in the year to August 2009, according to Destatis, Germany's national statistics office. In July 2009, the inflation rate was −0.5% and the  index rose 0.2% in the month of August.

Destatis said the inflation rate is still significantly impacted by price fluctuations for liquid fuel and motor fuels (mineral oil products). Despite the price rises for mineral oil products observed in the month of August 2009, such prices remain much lower than last year’s record levels (−16.1%). Food prices declined again and is another major reason for the low inflation rate. In August, food prices were by 3.0% below the level of a year earlier; similar price decreases were last recorded in 2003 (January 2003: −3.2%). Excluding energy and food, the inflation rate in August 2009 would have been 1.3%.

The European Union's harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) for Germany, declined 0.1% in August 2009 on August 2008. Compared with July 2009, the index was up 0.3%.

Turnover in manufacturing in July 2009: –16.5% in real terms on July 2008

In a separate report, Destatis said manufacturing sector turnover fall in real terms by a working-day adjusted 16.5% in July 2009 compared with July 2008 (following an unchanged –17.7% in June 2009). Domestic turnover decreased by 14.5% in the relevant period, revenue from business with foreign customers by 19.0%. Sales to Eurozone countries were 20.5% below previous year’s level, while sales to other countries went down by 17.7%.

Compared with the preceding month, real turnover in manufacturing showed a total decrease of 0.9% in July 2009 after having been adjusted for seasonal fluctuations and working-day variations (revised 1.1% in June 2009). Decreases were observed in domestic sales (-3.0%); turnover from business with foreign customers increased by 1.8%. Among foreign transactions, sales to Eurozone countries declined 1.4%, while a turnover increase of 4.6% was recorded for other foreign countries.

In the January to July 2009 period, the (working-day adjusted) turnover in manufacturing was 20.3% below the level of the same period of the previous year; domestic turnover declined 16.4% and foreign turnover by a total of 24.8%.
