New cars licensed in Ireland fell in June but at a slower pace

There were 4,833 new private cars licensed in Ireland, June 2009, compared with 7,369 in June 2008, a fall of 34.4% according to the CSO. The decline was at a slower pace than in recent months.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed in June 2009 was 1,025 compared with 2,827 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 63.7%.

The vehicle licensing figures also show that:

  • In June 2009, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 13,387 compared with 20,007 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 33.1%.
  • The total number of all new vehicles licensed during June 2009 was 6,614 compared with 11,774 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 43.8%.
  • In June 2009, of the 4,833 new private cars licensed, 2,264 (46.8%) were petrol and 2,501 (51.7%) were diesel.
  • The highest number of new private cars licensed in June 2009, classified by make, was Ford (730) followed by Volkswagen (602), Toyota (567), Nissan (328) and Opel (260).

The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and classified by taxation class. Figures for vehicle registrations are available separately: Vehicles Registered
