There were 10,997 new private cars licensed in January 2009, compared with 32,961 in January 2008, a decrease of 66.6%, according to the CSO.
The number of new goods vehicles licensed in January 2009 was 976 compared with 4,266 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 77.1%.
The vehicle licensing figures also show that:
In January 2009, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 19,353 compared with 45,463 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 57.4%.
The total number of all new vehicles licensed during January 2009 was 13,089 compared with 39,065 during the same month in 2008 - a decrease of 66.5%.
In January 2009, of the 10,997 new private cars licensed, 4,471 (40.7%) were petrol and 6,372 (57.9%) were diesel.
The highest number of new private cars licensed in January 2009, classified by make, was Ford (2,039) followed by Toyota (1,791) Nissan (1,046) Volkswagen (935) and Opel (783).
The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and classified by taxation class.
