Trinity College, Dublin, and NUI Galway are the only Irish universities to rise in the tenth annual QS World University Rankings. The Average annual undergraduate tuition fees in the top 10 have risen to record high of around US$34,000, nearly double the 2007 average of $18,500.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) beat Harvard and Cambridge to retain the top spot in the rankings.
The US takes 11 of the top 20 positions, but its dominance has eroded since the financial crisis. Of the 83 US universities in the top 400, 64 rank lower than in 2007/8.
The 43 US public universities in the top 400 have lost an average of 20 places since 2007/8, following successive government funding cuts. In contrast, 70% of the 62 Asian institutions in the top 400 rank higher than in 2007, yet still no Asian institution in the top 20.
Trinity College rose six places to 61st; University College Dublin dipped eight places to 139th; University College Cork slid twenty places to 210; NUI Galway rose three places to 284th; DCU tumbled 25 places to 349, out of 800 colleges in the rankings compiled for Quacquarelli Symonds.
The University of Limerick and DIT have slipped from ranking in the range between 415-500 to among the 501-550 group, while NUI Maynooth has skid from the 501-550 range to 551-600.
"The past four years have clearly been challenging for the Irish economy, and austerity measures have undoubtedly been a major factor contributing to the slide in its universities’ international standing," said QS head of research Ben Sowter.
University College Cork is reported to have tried to game the system by canvassing international academics for votes on 'reputation.'
Reputation accounts for 40% of the total. In addition, 20% each for staff-student ratio and the number of times college research is cited in academic journals. Reputation among employers accounts for 10%, while the remaining 10% is for internationalisation.
The top four Irish institutions, TCD, UCD, UCC and NUI Galway, all increased their scores for research citations.
