Irish Economy 2014: Number of overseas trips to Ireland by non-residents rose 7.3% in Q1

Irish Economy 2014: The number of overseas trips to Ireland by non-residents increased from 1.252m in Quarter 1 2013 to 1.343m trips in Quarter 1 2014 (+7.3%), the CSO reported today. The number of nights spent in Ireland by overseas travellers increased by 5.3% in Quarter 1 2014 compared with the same period of the previous year, up from 8.4m to 8.9m.

The average duration of overseas trips to Ireland fell from 6.7 nights in Quarter 1 2013 to 6.6 nights in Quarter 1 2014. Total tourism and travel earnings from overseas travellers to Ireland decreased by 0.9% between Quarter 1 2013 and Quarter 1 2014, down from €688m to €682m.

Trips by Irish residents overseas: In Quarter 1 2014, the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas decreased by 4.6%, from 1.21m trips in Quarter 1 2013 to 1.15m.

The average duration of overseas trips made by Irish residents fell from 7.3 nights in Quarter 1 2013 to 7.0 nights in Quarter 1 2014.

Total tourism and travel expenditure by Irish residents overseas decreased by 9.8%, down from €828m in Quarter 1 2013 to €747m in Quarter 1 2014. See table 10.

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s CSO figures confirm that Holidaymakers from overseas grew by +8% in the first quarter of 2014, with growth recorded from all of our market areas around the world. I am particularly pleased to see Holidaymakers from the Great Britain market showing growth of +27%. While it is still very early days – the first quarter represents only 18% of total overseas business with Easter falling later this year than last– this is a strong start to the year and reflects the sentiment we are hearing from our tourism industry partners in the Markets and here at home on the island of Ireland. It augurs well for 2014 as a whole and Tourism Ireland and our industry partners are rolling out a busy promotional programme around the world to keep that momentum going and build on the success of 2013.

Gibbons continued: “This year, we are placing a major focus on promoting the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route and Titanic as well as on major events like Limerick City of Culture and the Croke Park Classic. We will also build on the legacy of the Gathering, continuing to reach out to the Diaspora across the world.”
