New Irish car sales in February rose strongly compared with lows of February 2009

Official figures released today show a strong recovery in new Irish car sales in February compared with the dip in February 2009.

The Central Statistics Office said 11,707 new cars were licensed in the month, up 33% from a year earlier.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed also jumped, rising 36% to 1,494. The scrappage scheme that introduced in the Budget is seen has having boosted new business.

The number of new goods vehicles licensed in February 2010 was 1,494 compared with 1,097 in the corresponding month last year - an increase of 36.2%.

The licensing figures also show that:

1. In February 2010, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 19,496 compared with 18,604 in the corresponding month last year - an increase of 4.8%.

2. The total number of all new vehicles licensed during February 2010 was 14,061 compared with 10,922 during the same month in 2009 - an increase of 28.7%.

3. In February 2010, of the 11,707 new private cars licensed, 4,317 (36.9%) were petrol and 6,804 (58.1%) were diesel.

4. The highest number of new private cars licensed in February 2010, classified by make, was Toyota (1,663) followed by Volkswagen (1,460), Ford (1,402) and Renault (1,094).
