The Blackrock Clinic opened in 1984.
Blackrock Clinic, Ireland’s leading private sector hospital, today announced plans for a five year €100 million expansion programme to include a 3 floor extension to the existing hospital facility and a multi-storey car park.

The planned hospital development will facilitate a 42% increase in beds at the hospital, bringing the total number of beds to 160.

When the project is completed, Blackrock Clinic will be the first major acute hospital to accommodate all in-patients in single rooms, providing improved comfort and privacy as well as reducing the chance of infection. The scheme will also incorporate two new operating theatres, including an additional specialised orthopaedic theatre, which will result in a 40% increase in availability of theatre space.

Day case patients will benefit from an additional new dedicated Day Care floor, increasing capacity by 200% to accommodate up to 250 patients per day.

The expansion is expected to create 100 new clinical and administration jobs in the hospital, bringing total employment to 650 people.

In addition, a programme of extensive refurbishment will take place throughout the existing hospital building. This will include an overhaul of the restaurant and renovation of the reception area.

Completion of the extra floors is scheduled towards the end of 2009.

Work on a new multi-storey car park is already underway and will provide an additional 293 parking spaces at the hospital and is due to be fully operational in February 2008. On completion, a total of approximately 700 car parking spaces will be available on site for patients, visitors and staff.

Commenting on the announcement, Bryan Harty, Chief Executive of the hospital said, “We are delighted to embark on a programme of investment that will not only strengthen existing services at the Clinic but will also introduce greater patient capacity, improved facilities and a first class environment for patients, doctors and staff alike. This expansion is testament to our commitment to long term excellence in the delivery of acute surgical, medical and diagnostic services. It will be business as usual for Blackrock Clinic during construction and we plan that there will be only limited disruption to our normal hospital schedules or ongoing patient care”.

Blackrock Clinic, located north of the coastal village of Blackrock in South Dublin, came into operation in 1984 with the opening of the out patient complex. Today over 100 Medical Consultants covering a broad range of specialities practice from the consulting suites located in this private health care facility.

The hospital has both private rooms and a small number of semi-private rooms. It also includes a Coronary Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit, a Day Care Facility and an Oncology Day Ward. The services of the hospital involve the treatment and care of the acute medical, surgical and dental patient.

There is a big demand for private healthcare in Ireland and the majority of Irish workers have private health insurance as the development of the public health service from one of Europe's worst, is still a work-in-progress, 15 years after the emergence of what became known as the Celtic Tiger economy.
