Japan's current-account surplus plunged in 2011
Japan's current-account surplus plunged in 2011, as exports fell following the March 11 devastating earthquake and both energy prices and the value of the yen rose. It was the smallest surplus since 1996, the finance ministry said and the steepest contraction since at least 1986, when comparable percentage-change figures first were published.

China's GDP (gross domestic product) growth dropped to an annualised 8.9% in the last quarter of 2011, compared with a year earlier, confirming that Asia's growth engine is slowing. The annualized quarter-on-quarter rate sank to 8.2%, significantly below the third quarter’s 9.5%.

China's foreign trade jumped 22.5% in 2011 from a year earlier to hit $3.64trn, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said Tuesday. The country's annual trade surplus narrowed 14.5% year-on-year to $155.1bn in 2011, the agaency said. The figure has fallen from $295.5bn in 2008, $196.1bn in 2009, and $183.1bn in 2010.

Japan: After a sharp contraction in production and private demand following the massive earthquake in March, Japanese supply constraints are easing and activity has begun to recover according to the IMF (International Monetary Fund). GDP (gross domestic product) is forecast to decline by 0.7% in 2011 before rising by 2.9% in 2012. The outlook, however, remains uncertain depending on how quickly supply bottlenecks ease and sentiment recovers. The Fund in its regular assessment says that fiscal and structural reforms are needed if the world’s third largest economy is to continue being a positive force in the region.
