Visa says annual expenditure on Visa cards- -  debit, credit and prepaid - -  has reached €15.5bn for the first time, an increase of 17% on 2011 expenditure.  €1 in every €7 of consumer spending in Ireland is now on a Visa card.  However, Central Bank data in respect of June-November 2012 shows a fall of 3% in spending on Irish issued credit cards compared with the same period in 2011.

Update: The Government has announced the full sale of the €1bn  worth of contingent convertible capital notes in Bank of Ireland in a market placement. Michael Noonan, minister for finance, had earlier welcomed the successful conclusion of negotiations of its €1bn holding of Contingent Capital Notes (CCN’s) in Bank of Ireland. The sale generated bids totalling €4.8bn and the notes were sold at a small premium, netting the State a profit of €10m.

Irish pension managed funds rose 14.4% in 2012 but only 1 fund beat the ISEQ - - the Irish Stock exchange index average gain, suggesting that payment of fees to 'expert' share-pickers was a waste of money. The ISEQ average rose 17% in 2012 but excluding CRH and Elan, all the other main shares had impressive gains.
